William F. Brown, Professor of Art, has been Chairman of the Department of Art at the University of Evansville since 1999. Before he and his family moved to Evansville in 1980, he had taught at universities in Illinois, Arkansas, and West Virginia. Prior to teaching, Mr. Brown worked as a commercial artist for six years in Chicago, holding various positions involving layout and illustration. During that time, his illustrations, designs and photographs appeared in numerous publications such as The Chicago Guide, The Chicago Tribune and The Daily News. His specialty was rendering food presentation and related food products.
Mr. Brown received his BS from Indiana State University in Terre Haute and his MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1975. His major studio was painting and drawing, with a secondary area of photography. Mr. Brown also received Teaching Certification during his undergraduate studies. He has an extensive exhibition record as a painter, draftsman, and photographer, locally, regionally and nationally.
Mr. Brown's work is included in numerous private and corporate collections. Some major corporate collections include: SAFECO Insurance in Indianapolis, Yale/South Haven of Illinois, Sheldon Swope Gallery of Terre Haute, National City Bank in New Albany, CBIS of Cincinnati, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Deaconess Hospital, Integra Bank, Citizens Bank, American General Finance, Welborn Hospital, Columbia Medical Center, Methodist Temple, Fine Hatfield, Artisan Sheet Metal, Hafer Associates, and Solarbron Pointe, all of Evansville.
For many years, the inspiration for his work was his two sons and their toys. Since they have grown up, he has found new objects to fill his canvases. These objects are sometimes old, sometimes junk, sometimes broken but always important. Important because they ignite a memory, something that cannot always be explained but has some connection with the past.
